Turtles have been roaming the earth for many millions of years. Five out of eight known species are found in Sri Lanka who visit the island to lay eggs. Main areas of turtle nestling is western and southern beaches. Five species found in Sri Lanka are Green Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle and Leatherback Turtle, Loger head Turtle and Hawlesbill. Turtles are now a protected species in Sri Lanka though they have been killed for their flesh and shell for many years. Turtles are known to travel thousands of kilometres but returning to their birth place for nesting. There are many breading centres open to visitors in the southern coastal areas of the country.
