The Regional Agricultural Rice and Development Center (RRRDC) and its two sub stations, Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) at Bentota and Labuduwa continued with their research programmes, to develop and disseminate technologies to increase rice productivity in the five administrative districts of Kalutara, Colombo, Gampaha. Galle and part of Ratnapura in the Low Country Wet Zone (LCWZ). The RRRDC Bombuwela emphasizes to develop high yielding hoth red and white rice varieties particularly tolerant to iron toxicity whereas, the ARS, Labuduwa emphasizes to develop mainly red pericarp samba type rice varieties which are high in demand in the southern region of LCWZ. The ARS, Bentota emphasizes to develop rice varieties for the flood prone and saline areas conducting station and field research activities as farmer participatory programmes. In addition to the ongoing research programme, the progrommes on organic rice culture covering seed production (traditional and new improved varieties) and development of appropriate technologies on organic fertilizer and plant protection were continued at Bombuwela. Likewise the commercial seed production programme on recommended specific rice varieties bred in the Region that are in short supply was also continued. There was also a new programme on seed production of 'Ma Wee' (Bg 38) at the Centre.
