The Flower Drum Restaurants are the brainchild of David Gyi. He is the youngest child of a Chinese culinary expert and Cookery author, the late Josephine Gyi, so the art of Chinese cuisine came naturally to David. From a young age David assisted his mother in cookery demonstrations and acquired the skills for preparing mouth-watering dishes.
Having spent several years in Melbourne where he operated a Chinese take away “Jo Kwan’s” in the stylish suburb of Toorak, he decided to return to Sri Lanka. David opened the first Flower Drum restaurant 24 years ago and decided to name it after his favorite restaurant, the much acclaimed “Flower Drum” restaurant in Melbourne. He engaged the services of some of the best cooks from Hong Kong and gave the Sri Lankan connoisseur a taste of Hong Kong.
From the day Flower Drum opened it has been a success, and Flower Drum has expanded and has opened branches in Colombo, Battaramulla and Kandy. Known, to regulars, as "The Drum", the Drum has rapidly grown to be a household name and a family restaurant where its traditions are maintained.
When Flower Drum started in 1982, there was no counting of the hours. David worked all the time and still continues to do so, his drive for perfection never stops. Being a family business David now has his children, Alain and Kalen, assisting him. David has passed on a real love of food and a concern about the quality of ‘restauranting’ to his children, which has been part of David’s life for the past 40 years. Alain has worked along side his father for over 18 years and Kalen for 14 years.
The Board of Directors includes the distinguished business entrepreneurs Sohli Captain and Lester Weinman, whose assistance and contributions have been invaluable over the years. Victor Ferdinand, who has worked over 20 years for David, was appointed to the Board in recognition of his support and loyalty. Most of the staff have been with David for many years and are essential in the smooth running of the restaurants.
With its team of professional staff and training methods, Flower Drum has prided itself on maintaining its high standards. Flower Drum offers seating for up to 120 people and it can host functions for all occasions, whether it be a family dinner, birthday, business lunch, corporate functions, engagements, etc. Its highly modernized and expanded delivery service provides quick door-to-door execution of take-away orders. Flower Drum also specializes in home catering where all your culinary needs are provided, taking away all the hassles from the host and hostess, allowing them to enjoy those precious moments with their guests.
Yours hosts David, Alain and Kalen welcome you and any suggestions anytime.
