A unique location where you can relax, in true hill-country style. The climate is rated as one of the best in Sri Lanka - cool evenings and warm days offer a respite from the heat of the coastal resorts and is enjoyed by many Sri Lankans as well as foreign visitors.
We are high up here at 1000 metres surrounded by the vast panoramas of the Ella Gap. Karandagolla is slightly lower down than the cooler tea gardens of Badulla giving us a more tropical air and richer variety of exotic plants and fauna.
There is much wild country to explore on foot. Many and varied excursions can be arranged. The more active may engage with nature by climbing Little Adams Peak or visiting our local organic tea plantation. Alternatively you can just chill out and enjoy the fine food and comfort of the ‘Bungalow’, sip chilled drinks on the verandah of an evening, stroll in the grounds or slump in a hammock!
The bungalow is located on the southern fringes of the tea plantation area established in the late 19th century during the colonial period. The extensive garden & grounds support a rare collection of tropical fruit trees as well as timber varieties where you will be welcome to retreat to its peaceful glades.
The property was originally constructed in the late 19th century by a Scottish tea planter, Malcolm George. He left in 1948 when the newly independent government of Ceylon nationalised the tea industry. He was paid one pound sterling for each acre of his 90 hectare estate!
There is easy access to the village of Ella, the Rawana Falls and the tea towns of Bandarawela and Badulla. Trains and buses allow access to most parts of the country. Nuwara Eliya and Kandy are to the North and linked by rail to Ella the Yala National park, the newer Udawalawe Park which hosts the largest wild elephant herds in Asia and the famous bird sanctuary of Bundala can be accessed by jeep. It is a two hour journey south from Karandagolla
Our two new serviced self-catering apartments named ‘Tree Top’ and ‘Tamarind’ are now completed. These are set in the Bungalow plantation and have fantastic views across the valley to the Ella ridge.
The apartments are ideal for longer stay visitors who may wish to experiment with some Sri Lankan style cooking after visiting the wonderful food markets locally or who would prefer to keep to their own timetables and look after themselves.
The apartments are well-equipped with some basic starter supplies to minimize the amount of shopping needed to look after yourselves although meals can be taken in the Bungalow restaurant if preferred.
