As YAMU makes clear Colombo isn't as stuck for entertainment options as it used to be. In fact far from it - there's plenty to do in the city but for all the various events, new dining and drinking options sometimes nothing can quite beat being curling up on your sofa, staring at the TV, slowly devouring a pile of fresh DVDs.
Now I'm a very infrequent consumer of this, still default, video medium but when the mood for plug, press, play and tune out entertainment strikes me I find my self making a beeline to The Classic Entertainment on the Galle Road at Colpetty. This large, and centrally located, emporium benefits from long aisles stuffed with everything from Hollywood's latest offerings to 1940's silver screen classics and obscure Japanese Anime. The quality seems to be broadly above average, by Colombo DVD standards and the prices are the usual - Rs 100, Rs 200 for some of the classics. They have, as far as I know, the widest selection of box sets in town and in addition to DVD's - stock electronics, a line of sarwars and kurthas imported from india/pakistan and supply biryani....
So ideally you can pick up and a giant plate of biryani, a stack of DVD's and even some nice comfortable Indian pyjamas to watch them in without leaving the Galle Road. It's not a particularly exciting underground DVD den full of obscure treasures from the 80's but its central and the selection, which includes a fair few world-cinema type classics, is good.
