The Department of Official Languages has been established on 01.10.1956 as the institution for implementing the Official Language, Act No. 33 of 1956. According to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1987 and the 16th Amendment to the Constitution in 1988, both languages of Sinhala and Tamil became the Official Languages in Sri Lanka and English language as the link language. The Department of Official Languages is responsible for providing such facilities. This Department is under the purview of the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration and The Commissioner is the Head of the Department. This Department is situated at “Basha Mandiraya”, No 341/7, Kotte Road, Rajagiriya.

“To facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the Official Language Policy with the objective of achieving Peace and Harmony”.
Objectives
To Facilitate the Public officers and students who are following Courses in languages to improve their trilingual (Sinhala,Tamil, English) skills and other Language (Foreign) skills.
To appear as the official translator of public institutions to facilitate the implement action of the Official Language Policy.
To compile Glossaries and text books on various subjects for the accomplishment of the purpose
