Horakelly Farm
Horakelley Estate and Bandara division was managed by Sterling Company and was vested with the Land reforms Commission. Subsequently, these lands were managed by Janatha estate Development Board. During 1976, the property was handed over to the National Livestock Development Board. Horrakelley is situated approximately 2km off Negombo-Chilaw main road and 3 ½ km from Mahawewa town towards Chilaw.
Solid and Cultimate
The soils of this region belong to Sandy Regosols which occur on the slightly elevated beaches of the coastal areas of the intermediate zone. These soils are moderately neutral in soil reaction. The organic matter and Nitrogen status is low. The Phosphorus status is low whilst the Potassium status is medium. These soils are fairly well supplied with calcium and Magnesium with a moderately good cation exchange capacity. Although, the Chemical characteristics of these soils are fair. The presences of a significant proportion of weather able minerals contribute towards a good fertility level.
The physical fertility of these soils is good. Despite the coarse texture and rapid infiltration rates the presence of an underling fresh water lens provides a reliable source of water for deep rooted crops.
