Mahawewa Divisional Secretariat which is situated near 40th mile post of Colombo – Puttalam road was established here on 14.03.1990. Before that, the duties of this area was done by Divisional Secretariat, Nattandiya.
Our History
The Mahawewa has a span of a Recorded history of roughly around 700 years and dated back to king Weer Prakrambahuda 8th of kotte.its said that the prince Thaniya Wallabah has been sent by his father to expel the marauding gangs of Murrukku. These Murukkus were South Indian invaders who roam in search of things to steal or people to attack in the surrounding area, at that time this was the main concern of the people to be solved forthwith.
As expected the prince an expert warrior conquer the invaders and established the harmony throughout the community. To the next step prince contribute in great manner to developed the area to be self sufficient in food by constructing several man made reservoir and expanding the extent of paddy fields.
The Thaniy Wallbha prince beside his talents in Martial arts proved him self as a devoted statesman, first he developed the means of live hood and next dedicated to enhanced the spiritual value of community by supporting the improvements of Buddhists Culture in many ways.
Mahawewa is one of the important reservoir build under the direct supervision of the prince. The legends indicates that the prince who sat under the shades of Giant Madan tree and led the construction process under his personnel supervision.
The historical Madan tree is still can be seen in very good condition on the bund of reservoir. we can proudly pronounce as the only Madan tree in the srilanka with the recorded history behind.
The people of the area was so greatfull and the Prince Thaniya Wallbha was respected as Thaniya wallbha deviyo after his demise, which the prince was worship by the people as divine, there is small shrine close to the Madan Tree which held the royal armaments of the Thaniya Wallabha Devioyo.
