Creation or commencement of Dedigama jewelers has a long history, beginning from Present incumbent owner’s grandfather in 1950. During the past our culture as well as in social standing a Jewellery shop in a town was cited as an important place. Marriages, births and other Ceremonies commenced with Jewellery or gold, playing a prominent role, and the owner of such Jewellery shops had a high ranking level In the society so as Mr. l.A.D. Juwanishamy the grandfather of the present owner. As a traditionally owned business, with the demise of Mr. Jawanishamy, Mr. Dharmadasa Dedigama the son-in-law took over his business as the most trusted gold house in the vicinity of the South Western Province. He had a ‘Personal Touch’ and that went a long way to establish his business. During this period he introduced the business of Gem Trading. The present incumbent owner came into the picture in 1992, having had his education at Wesley College and Prembrooke Academy in Colombo 7. Since then the business took over a positive change, a business which was housed in a small shop in the town of Maharagama took a remarkable upward trend, a beginning of a new era and ventured out for pawn brokering which is even lucrative now with hight profit margins and new Jewellery sales outlets in selected towns. From Maharagama they expanded upto Beruwaia and6ihe Kandy road upto Nittambuwa further along the Negombo road up to Wattala.
Presently there are 62 outlets of Pawn brokering shops and Jewellery sales shops. There are300 Nos. of staff and has ventured out to various other business area due to the
Vision of Mr. Ranjan Dedigama. In fact with regard to pawn brokering business they have broken the monopoly and have become the leader with the number of outlets and turnover.
Gem exports have captured new markets In Australia, Thailand, Japan and Germany. Due to the success of same they have even ventured out to the diamond business.
With regard to property development which is another success. Lands have been purchased in many areas and developed for sales along with the buildings which have been purchased and developed and given out on lease.
Furthermore, we have been Agents for Western Union Money Transferring (Mercantile Merchant Bank Ltd) and had received two Merit Awards Consecutively for the years 2004 and 2005.We have achieved a tremendous success in this field of business.
Apart from Homeland business activities we have touched the American Market by purchasing a mini supermarket and three wireless stores namely Cowell Food Mart Woodbury phone store, Philly store and Royersford store in New Jersey & Pennsylvania
